Shawn McKelvey Designs Winning Souvenir Poster
He’s done it again! Shawn McKelvey has won the Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival poster contest for the fourth time.
McKelvey has created four winning posters for the Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival. His first was a pastel pencil of a balloon cluster designed to look like a bunch of grapes flying over Lake Skinner. He also created the 25th anniversary souvenir poster and now with this rendition of the evening balloon glow, McKelvey’s creation becomes the first to show off the colors of the Festival’s evening showcase.
“I wanted to develop a different look and feel for the poster,” stated Shawn McKelvey on his winning design. “The night scene was a great way to bring out the colors of the balloons.”
Since 1988, Shawn has been a freelance illustrator for the toy, entertainment and advertising industries. He’s created game board or product illustrations for Harry Potter, the Game of Life and Whac-a-mole. For the last 10 years Shawn has focused on landscape painting and is represented by the Pinnell Gallery in Fallbrook.
For 27 years this premier event has been charming guests with spectacular dawn hot air balloon launches, premium wine tasting from 22 wineries, gourmet wine and food pairing, evening concerts and evening balloon glows.
Friday concerts include Jimmy Wayne, The Band Perry and Bomshel. Reserve seats are available for this concert. Saturday headliners are Paul Rodgers, Gin Blossoms and Vertical Horizon. Sunday the Wine Stage headliner is Spyro Gyra. The WGAS Freestyle motocross show is at the Main Stage. For more information and tickets visit www.tvbwf.com or call (951) 676-6713.

The Festival will place empty wine barrels in the concert area for donations to Jimmy Wayne's campaign: “Meet Me Halfway: Raising Awareness of Homeless Teens and Foster Children.”
In January, Wayne embarked on a 1,660 mile walk from Nashville, TN to Phoenix, AZ to increase public knowledge of homeless teens and foster children. Walking 25 miles a day, Jimmy fits his miles in between concerts, speaking with state governors and in Washington, D.C. He has walked 721 miles to date, with July as his target month for hitting Phoenix. Wayne’s walk and campaign has brought the plight of foster children who “age out” into the forefront as he Tweets his progress daily on twitter.

New Faces of Country Headline Friday Night at Temecula Wine Fest
Friday night, June 4 the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival will feature three of the newest stars on the country music scene beginning with headliner Jimmy Wayne.
Wayne’s career first took off with a remake of Hall & Oates’ pop classic “Sara Smile.” He sang the tune regularly during his days as a North Carolina prison guard, auditioned with it in 2002 and got a contract with DreamWorks Records. His debut CD appeared in 2003 and produced the top-10 hits “Stay Gone and “I Love You This Much.” After DreamWorks shut its doors, Wayne signed with Valory Music Company and released “Do You Believe Me Now” a No. 1 for three weeks in 2008-09.
On Saturday, April 3, Wayne celebrated making it to his halfway point for his walk for homeless teens titled “Meet Me Halfway.” Wayne was in Amarillo, Texas after walking 93 days and 977 miles from his starting point of Nashville, Tennessee. He will end the walk in Phoenix, Arizona. No stranger to adversity, Wayne’s father abandoned his family. His mother went to prison, and Wayne was shuttled to a series of foster homes. His stepfather tried to murder him and he was a homeless teen until a North Carolina couple took him in and encouraged his love of music. Wayne’s walk can be followed at http://meetmehalfway.jimmywayne.com or you can follow him on twitter.com/JimmyWayne.
The Band Perry and Bomshel will also be in concert Friday as part of the Country Friday lineup. The Band Perry currently has their hit song “Hip to My Heart” at #24 on the Billboard Country Song Chart, and has spent 22 weeks on the charts. Comprised of siblings Kimberly, Reid and Neil Perry, the family band had their first country recording session in 2008, caught the ear of Scott Borchetta and Jimmy Harnen, the CEO and president of Republic Nashville, and signed with the new label in the summer of 2009. The group is finishing their debut album due to come out later this year.
Bomshel, a vivacious duo act of fiddle player Kristy Osmunson and lead singer Kelley Shepard, rounds out the three-act show. Their song “Fight Like A Girl” released late last year peaked at No. 30 on the Country Charts. Their album of the same title, was released in October and has peaked at No. 24. In January the duo was nominated by the Academy of Country Music for Top New Duo. The awards are this month.

Jazz Giants Spyro Gyra at Temecula Festival Sunday
Treating the wine tasters Sunday at the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival will be a special concert from smooth jazz veterans Spyro Gyra on the wine stage. For more than three decades, Spyro Gyra has maintained a position at the forefront of modern jazz by successfully managing not just one, but several feats of creative dexterity.
“That's what has kept this band going,” said band founder Jay Beckenstein. “There are always balances to be found – between the individual player and the group, between the songwriter and the player. It's about both satisfying yourself and satisfying your audience. And when you’re improvising in front of a crowd, you’re really walking down that wire.”
Since their first top single of “Morning Dance” in 1979, Spyro Gyra has churned out album after album and song after song of contemporary jazz that remains in the forefront for innovation. In 2001 the band’s album “In Modern Times” spent 64 weeks on Billboards’ Contemporary Jazz chart, peaking at No. 2. Three albums later “Wrapped In A Dream” gained the group a Grammy nomination in 2006.
The 2007 release of “Good To Go-Go” scored two Grammy nominations in December 2007; Best Pop Instrumental Album and Best Pop Instrumental Performance (the latter nomination for the track entitled “Simple Pleasures”.) In 2008 Spyro Gyra’s “A Night Before Christmas” was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Pop Instrumental album.
Get that adrenaline rush at the main stage with the WGAS Freestyle Motocross show. Stars from around the world head to the Festival for this show. Riders who have performed in the past include: Jimmy Fitzpatrick, Todd Potter, Taka, Ox-Jeff Cargola, Wes Agee, Ryan Hagy, Australian riders Jackson Strong and Robbie Alberg and Cito Vascas from Brazil. Riders for the 2010 show will be announced at a later date.

I WANT TO CAMP POINTS ... now listed for 4/20/2010
Thank you to ALL OF THE I WANT TO CAMP CONTESTANTS!!!
Wow, you kept us busy all weekend. I'm posting points and names. Let me know if you want to be a contestant and we missed you or if you think points are missing. We did have duplicate names and postings and the first posting based on time/day stamp was the one we counted.
We have another weekend project ... this one will gain points for going to some of our radio sponsors' events. We'll announce it early so you can plan. One location is in Los Angeles beach area, the other San Diego beach area so with a great weekend ahead you will be able to pick your location for points.
Watch for posts ... for O.C., L.A. and San Diego folks who wanted earlier posts of clues to sponsors - we are going to post the next days location the night before. Hope that helps. Thanks again for participating and remember we will have some additional prizes at the end, with one drawn from all contestants no matter what the points.
Remember, if you think we missed something, please let us know and we'll confirm. And if you are lagging behind, don't worry. There are plenty of weekend projects that can help you get points in a hurry - just like the I"M A FAN BECAUSE.
Our way of saying thanks for playing.

As Promised... Points and Leaders in the I Want to Camp Contest
Welcome everyone to the I Want To Camp contest for a Campsite at the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival June 4-6. As you know these sites sold out in less than one hour. We saved one for one special "Fan" of the Festival.
It includes full hook up, two adult weekend passes, and two reserved seats at a concert of your choice. (subject to availability at time of winning.)
We started slow to help everyone get their bearings. The key will be:
Every DAY - Monday thru Friday - You will have a chance to earn points. We may give you a weekend project. But points are due ... tasks reported in daily. Weekend tasks we will allow til 5 p.m. Monday for completion. And there will be dozens of ways to earn the points. The person with the most at the end of the contest (May 9) wins the campsite and amenites. (see rules for details on Facebook)
Just want to say one thing. We have four weeks ahead of us. So do not get discouraged. There are plenty of points to earn and fair warning ... some will require you go or be in places that our main radio partners might be. This means you might be asked to go somewhere where GO COUNTRY, 94.7 the Wave, KROQ, (Los Angeles stations) or KIFM, MY 94/STAR, with the La Jolla Marathon and all Clear Channel Stations or KSon (all in San Diego) and of course KATY FM are broadcasting. Any of these locales will earn more points. And of course 2-3 times a week you can pick up points at sponsors. Those who get the "prize" envelope get more points. GOOD LUCK!!
HERE ARE THE CONTESTANTS AND TOTALS

Paul Rodgers, Spyro Gyra Headline Festival

Paul Rodgers, “The Voice” of Bad Company, member of “Free” and “The Firm, will headline the 27th Annual Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival, Saturday, June 5 at Lake Skinner Recreation area. Rodgers is just part of a packed Saturday lineup that includes Vertical Horizon and Gin Blossoms.
Rodgers www.paulrodgers.net career spans from the 1960s where he was a singer-songwriter with the band Free, a British band that hit the international charts with the Rodgers’s penned hit “All Right Now.” He later formed Bad Company. From 1973 to 1982 the band produced a series of hits including “Feel Like Making Love,” “Can’t Get Enough,” “Shooting Star,” “Bad Company,” and “Run with the Pack” and “Rock and Roll Fantasy.” Bad Company earned six platinum albums until Rodgers left in 1982.
Rodgers linked with Jimmy Page briefly with the band The Firm. In 1993 Rodgers produced a Grammy nominated solo CD, “Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute to Muddy Waters.” The CD included a who’s who of guitarists with Brian May, Gary Moore, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Steve Miller, and Buddy Guy. Rodgers has mixed touring with Bad Company, touring and recording with Queen, and his solo career for the past decade. Last year he was voted the # 3 Greatest Voice in Rock in Rolling Stone magazine by fans and voted the #2 Greatest Singer in Rock by Classic Rock Magazine.
Vertical Horizon has been hitting the Rock Charts with their alternative sound since 1999 when they hit #1 on the charts with the song “Everything You Want.” The group’s most recent CD “Burning Down the Days” introduced lead singer’s Matthew Scannell “Save Me From Myself,” with Rush drummer Neil Peart. The song has risen rapidly on Hot AC charts.
Launched in 1991 as a folk-based acoustic duo, Vertical Horizon www.verticalhorizon.com became a slick pop/alternative rock band with original tunes that have been on soundtracks for popular movies and television series. Vertical Horizon’s recent surge is a result of having their song “The Best I Ever Had” on the soundtrack of the vampire movie “Twilight/New Moon.” The song was also played on the WB drama “Roswell.” “Finding Me” was heard on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Echo” was played on the WB’s “One Tree Hill.” “You’re a God” and “Give You Back” were both played in the pilot episode of Alias and “You’re A God” was heard on “Bruce Almighty.”
Gin Blossoms www.ginblossoms.net return to the Festival fueled with their hits “Hey Jealousy,” “Follow You Down,” “Found Out About You,” and “Till I Hear It From You.” The alternative rock band formed in Tempe, Arizona in 1987 and took their name from a W.C. Fields photo that had the caption “W.C. Fields with gin blossoms.” The band released three albums by the mid 1990s, broke up in 1997, reunited in 2002, and released a fourth album “Major Lodge Victory” in 2006. The group released a live album, “Live In Concert” last year, which included live performances of their major hits plus two from their 2006 album, “Learning the Hard Way” and “Long Time Gone.” They reportedly have a new studio album ready for release sometime this year.
Tickets for the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival are available online now at reduced rates. Prices at the gates during the Festival will be higher. Balloon & Wine Festival Campsite Reservations Open March 9th

Each year campsites at Lake Skinner for the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival sell out in less than an hour. This year “wannabe” campers have one of the best chances to get a coveted campsite during the Festival June 4-6. All reservations will be online at www.tvbwf.com beginning March 9, 2010.
“We wanted to make it easier for our guests to get their campsites rather than dialing frantically at 8 a.m. the morning the sites go on sale,” stated executive director Carol Popejoy.
The Festival has also customized the purchase by allowing Festival guests to choose from a variety of ticket packages including one day and three day passes. Tickets are not included with the campsite price and must be added to the reservation.
Campsites at Lake Skinner start at $80 for dry camping and range up to $200 for full hookup with power, water and sewer dump.
Campsites will only be available online and this is a change from the previous years.
“In the past campers would wait for the toll free phone lines to open and then frantically call getting busy signals and waiting for their turn. We sold out in 40 minutes,” Popejoy added.
Held at the Lake Skinner Recreation Area and surrounded by the Shipley Preserve, the Festival’s park setting provides natural vistas whether flying aboard a hot air balloon, or planted on terra firma. The three-day event includes morning hot air balloon launches, evening balloon glows, wine tasting from more than 20 wineries, concerts on two different stages, and a Sunday freestyle motocross show.
“ Photographers revel in the visuals from dawn balloon ascensions to the colorful evening balloon glows,” Popejoy added. “This makes camping during the event the extreme Festival experience.”
